In March 2023, the Texas GOP voted 57-5 to censure Congressman Tony Gonzales, who currently represents Texas Congressional District 23.
The censure resolution cites, among other things, Gonzales’s support for the “Respect for Marriage Act,” which repealed the “Defense of Marriage Act,” and the “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act,” which was passed in the aftermath of the Uvalde Shooting, as reasons for Gonzales’s censure.
Gonzales, who was first elected in 2020, currently faces three primary challengers. Victor Avila is one of those challengers.
Avila is a retired special agent for ICE and recently ran for Texas Land Commissioner during the 2022 election cycle. He earned 7.5% of the vote during the Republican Primary, 5th place.
In our discussion with Avila, we discussed the crisis affecting the US-Mexico border, the possible impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas, and public safety.
Avila is one of four Republicans running to represent Texas Congressional District 23. He joins Congressman Tony Gonzales, Julie Clark, and Brandon Herrera.
The filing deadline is December 11, 2023, and the primary election is on March 5, 2024.
